Setting up a Dialup Connection to Carlow on a Macintosh Computer
   
  You will need the following software to be able to make a dialup connection to Carlow College:
1. MacTCP (comes on your Macintosh System disks) or use OpenTransport
2. FreePPP 2.5 (available from the Carlow Bookstore in the Macintosh Dialup Package) or use OpenTransport
3. Fetch FTP 3.0.3 (available from the Carlow Bookstore in the Macintosh Dialup Package)
4. Netscape (can be obtained from Netscape’s FTP site on the Internet)
5. System 7.1 or higher
Note:OpenTransport can take the place of MacTCP and FreePPP, but these utilities are not yet supported by the Information Systems department.

You will also need the following hardware (minimum requirements) to connect:
6. Macintosh with a 68030 processor or higher (all PowerMacs qualify)
7. 16 MB or more memory
8. 14.4 kbps or better modem (33.6 kbps preferred)

   
Mac TCP
  1. If you do not have a MacTCP control panel icon, you’ll need to install MacTCP.
2. Run the Macintosh System Install program on your System disks. Under networking components select MacTCP (you can install TCP/IP & OpenTransport this way).
3. After MacTCP is installed, click System, Retart reboot your computer to make the system configuration changes take effect.
   
FreePPP
  To install FreePPP:
1. Reboot while you press and hold the Shift key; This will disable the Macintosh extension applications.
2. Release the Shift key when bootup completes.
3. Insert the FreePPP disk and drag the FreePPP Setup icon to the Macintosh HD icon.
4. Open the FreePPP Install 2.5v3 folder and double-click the FreePPP Install 2.5v3 installer icon (a monkey face) and follow installer directions.
5. After the install, and before configuring FreePPP, you may be asked for configuration information; you will need to restart your system first; Click System, Restart.
 
  Mac TCP Instructions
Go into your Control Panels and double-click Mac TCP.
OpenTranssport users should enable TCP/IP and open that control panel)
     
    When MacTCP window comes up, click the More… button.
     
   
 
   
  2. In Obtain Address: area, click Manually radio button so that the program will allow you to make changes. Make your settings match the ones above (Illustration 2). FreePPP may ask for these same settings, just humor the program and enter them when prompted; they will then be reflected in the MacTCP settings once you reach this step.
3. For Gateway Address: enter 172.16.255.254
4. Enter juliet.carlow.edu for Domain, and 172.16.1.123 for IP Address. Make sure that the Default radio button is selected.
5. After entering this data, go to Obtain Address: area and click the Server button, then click OK.
6. Click System, Restart to reboot the computer.
 
   
Configuring FreePPP 2.5
  1. Next to the telephone icon, on upper-right of the menu bar (next to the ? mark), choose Open FreePPP Setup. If the telephone icon is not present, check to make sure that the ~FreePPP menu is in the Control Panel (it will sort near the bottom because of the ~ character it starts with). If it isn't there, FreePPP installation may not have completed successfully.
2. Click System, Restart to reboot the computer to see if this resolves the problem. If not, you may need to reinstall FreePPP again.
 
  The FreePPP Setup screen will appear. Click the small blue triangle in the bottom left corner of the screen.

The FreePPP Setup screen will appear. It has three tabs (General, Accounts, Locations). Click on the box for first four options in General tab area.

 
 
   
  3. Click the Modem Setup… button. The FreePPP Modem Setup screen will appear.
4. In the Connected To: box, choose the port your modem is connected to
5. For Dial Type, select either Tone or Pulse, depending on the type of phone line you have.
6. Click on boxes for Modem speaker on while connecting and Hangup on disconnect, then select AutoDetect in it string.
7. Click OK.
Note: Most modems work with auto-detect, but some may not. Or, if you get an error message about detecting the modem type, select Use: and type in the init string recommended by your modem's documentation, or type in your modem’s initialization string, AT&F1 (usually works for most Macs). Click OK.
   
 
   
  8. In the FreePPP Setup Screen (Illustration 3), click Accounts.
9. Click New. A screen (Illustration 5) with tabs for Account, Connection, and Options will appear.
10. Type a name for your dial-up session in Server Name: and the Phone number: 578-8870 for local calls in (412) area code. 1-800-699-3890 for long distance calls outside of (412) area code.
Note: If you have Call Waiting, you must precede the phone number with the call waiting disable code that your telephone company uses, e.g. *70
11. Type a name for your dial-up session in ‘Server Name:’ and the ‘Phone number:’ 578-8870 for local calls in (412) area code. 1-800-699-3890 for long distance calls outside of (412) area code.
Note: Please check your local phone book to determine if your phone exchange is a local or long distance call. If in doubt, call your phone company.
12. If you wish, you can type your User name: e.g. 123456 and Password: e.g. user4car in the appropriate boxes. If you do not enter anything the program will ask you for the information when you login to remote server.
Note: This will allow anyone who uses your computer to get into the system with your name.
13. Click OK.
14. Click the Connection tab (illustration 6)
15. Change the Port Speed: to the specified modem speed that is in the modem’s documentation.
Note: most Macs need to be set at 57600 bps. Open Transport and some new Mac computers can go even faster.
   
 
   
  17. The Modem init string: it should be AT&F1 (Optionally, you can add M0 to turn off the modem speaker when modem dials).
18. Click OK to finish.
19. Now click the Options tab (Illustration 7) and enter the information as shown in the picture.
20. Domain name: carlow.edu
21. Primary DNS: 172.16.1.123
22. Click OK. Then click OK to close the FreePPP Setup window.
23. Click System, Retart to reboot the computer.
 
  DIALUP To Carlow:
  Go into Control Panels, double-click Mac TCP, then double-click the FreePPP icon.
