Policy on the Responsible Use of Information Technology

  Last Revised: Fall 2007

The following is a summary of the policies governing information technology at Carlow.

As a user of information technology at Carlow, you are responsible for adhering to the institution’s technology policies. Violation of any of these policies may result in termination of your account or network privileges, judicial action, or prosecution. Contact the Information Technology Help Desk at 412-578-8700 or helpdesk@carlow.edu for questions concerning this policy.

1. The Carlow network is intended for the academic, administrative, and research efforts of
the members of the Carlow community. It may not be used for personal gain, including
the support of a commercial or personal business, or to solicit goods, services, or money (chain
letters, pyramid schemes, etc.)
2. Information technology and the campus network may not be used to violate any federal, state,
or local laws or any of the policies of Carlow.
3. You may not use information technology or the campus network to engage in copyright
infringements, including the unauthorized distribution of copyrighted material, software
piracy, and copyrighted music. This includes, but is not limited to, the distribution of
copyrighted music and movie files (MP3’s, etc.)
4. You should help maintain the integrity of the campus network by ensuring that your password(s)
is kept strictly confidential. Please select a password that is not easily guessed and do not share your password or write it down. Your Carlow email account is intended for your sole use and may not be shared with other parties.  You are solely responsible for all activity that originates from your account(s) or from the I.P. address that is assigned to your computer. Please remember to log out of your accounts. If you believe your password has been compromised, reset it immediately, or call the helpdesk.
5. You are asked to treat all Carlow technology resources with care and respect:
     a. Please advise the Office of Information Technology promptly regarding problems with
hardware, software, or viruses.
     b. Please remove any unused or unnecessary files from your network directory or email
in a timely manner.
     c. The theft or unauthorized use or removal of any Carlow-owned technology resources is
punishable by the University and or local, state, and/or federal agencies.
     d. Only one computer may be connected to each jack in the residence halls. No devices
other than a single network interface card may be connected.
     e. Personal networking equipment such as hubs, switches, and wireless hubs, may not be
connected to the campus network without authorization from the Office of Information
Technology.
6. Carlow reserves the right to suspend or revoke a user's access to the Carlow network for misuse or violation of Carlow policy.
7. The Information Technology Department will provide opportunities to achieve a minimum level of
competency in technology among Carlow's faculty, staff, administrators, and students.
