Wireless Access

The Information Technology department implemented wireless network access on campus! A student, staff, or faculty member with a wireless laptop can access the Carlow network from a variety of locations across campus via nearly 72 access points. These locations include:
          - AJP - floors 1 through 3
          - Antonian Hall – vending machine area on the 1st floor, floors 2 through 6, and the theater
          - Aquinas Hall – most of the building
          - Dougherty – all living areas and Franny’s cafeteria
          - The Center for Leadership and Management building (CLAM)
          - The Community and Worship Center
          - Convent – most of the building
          - Curran Hall – floors 2 through 6
          - FWH - all living areas, lobby, and all other open areas and all business offices
          - Grace – porch areas and floors 2 through 5 including Kresge Theater
          - The Green
          - McAuley Hall
          - St. Joe's Gymnasium
          - Tiernan Cafeteria

There are three types of wireless access available to students, faculty, and staff. These include:

1. Full accessto the Carlow network (Named Wireless 802 when “View Available Wireless Networks” is displayed) – in order for this to be achieved, you must have a laptop that supports wireless 802.1x connectivity. (Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Vista, and a wireless a/b/g network card). You will need to bring your laptop to the Help Desk and have a technician configure your computer. This will ensure that your transmissions are secured and encrypted. Once on the network, you will be able to access your “H:” drive, websites that are secured for Carlow access only, and the internet.

2. Partial access to the Carlow network (Named Wireless 803 when “View Available Wireless Networks” is displayed) – if you don’t require full access, you will be allowed to authenticate to the Carlow wireless network. Using this method, you will automatically receive a network policy web page when you try to access the internet via an internet browser. When this web page appears, you may enter your Active Directory username and password and authenticate to the Carlow network. You will be given access to Carlow’s websites that are secured to Carlow users only. You will be able to access your H: Drive.

3. Guest access –(Named Wireless 803 when “View Available Wireless Networks” is displayed) if you choose not to authenticate to the Carlow network using your Active Directory password, you can still gain ‘guest’ access. This is particularly useful for vendors who visit campus or students who only wish to occasionally access the network. This access is closely monitored and will not allow you access to any internal resources at Carlow. If you choose this method, be aware that Carlow reserves the right to terminate your access at any time and to closely watch your connection for violations of our network policy.

Wireless use has skyrocketed on campus and you can now regularly see students using the wireless access in the residence halls and the common areas on campus.

If you need help accessing the wireless network, please visit our Help Desk on the 2nd floor of Antonian Hall with your laptop.
