Welcome to the back-to-school edition of Bits-n-Bytes!

This newsletter is much longer than normal and that’s because we completed so many new and exciting projects throughout the summer that we didn’t know what to leave out.

You’ll read about the new wireless network, the smart classrooms, the upcoming course offerings for faculty, the new Webstudent, and many, many other projects.

This summer would not be complete, however, without a huge THANK YOU to the hard-working individuals in the Information Technology department. They are the hardest working, most amazing group of individuals I’ve ever had the opportunity to work with, and their dedication is demonstrated in every article that appears in this edition of Bits-n-Bytes.

As always, if you have questions, comments, or suggestions, please contact our Help Desk at x8700 or email us at: helpdesk@carlow.edu

Thank you for your continued patience while we work on these improvements.

We are happy to announce that the conversion from McAfee to SOPHOS is complete on campus. This means that all individual PC’s for faculty & staff as well as all lab computers have been converted to use the SOPHOS anti-virus software. We are now able to monitor virus outbreaks on campus and all computers have been configured to retrieve virus

definition updates every three hours from a server housed at Carlow.

However, the most exciting news is that SOPHOS is now available for home use by faculty/staff and all resident students. The cost of the software is $1.00 to pay for the cost of the CD. If you’d like a copy of the software, you must show your ID card at the Help Desk to verify that you are an active Carlow resident student or faculty/staff member. You will need to pay the $1.00 fee and sign an agreement

about using/installing the software.

Students – be aware that many new PC’s come with a TRIAL version of Norton or McAfee and that these versions will stop updating their virus definition files after 90 days. If you haven’t checked your computer lately, please verify that your virus definitions are current or obtain a copy of the SOPHOS software from our Help Desk to ensure you are protected.
