Summer Institutes on Teaching with Technology
Scored a Home Run

Put another one up on the “keyboard.” Summer 2007 marked the third consecutive year for the institutes on teaching with technology, and the participants were the big winners. The first institute was held May 21 -25, and the theme was “Enhancing Your Teaching Using Blackboard.” The line up was diverse, including faculty, staff, and students from various disciplines and departments: Kathleen Berg, Professional Leadership; Shelly Brown, Political Science; Michael Capp, Biology; Kathy Werries, Professional Counseling; Sallie Wormer, E-Portfolio Coordinator; and Chelsea Kraushaar, Sp.ir.it Student Coordinator. The team was coached by Denise King and Nola Coulson. All players contributed to the success; no one sat on the sidelines. The team shared strategies and ideas on how to enhance teaching, facilitate organizational activities, and provide academic support using Blackboard.

The second series was underway with the institute on “Advanced Technologies,” held June 11 -15.  This series roster included

Kathleen Berg, Professional Leadership; Marian Fedak, Nursing; Sr. Mary Joy Haywood, Biology; Diane Matthews, Management; Diane Sims, English; Laura Smagala, Management; Micheline Stabile, Education; and Aisha White, Education. Players were coached by Denise King and Alicia Cerullo. There was much excitement among the team as they explored educational technologies such as podcasting, clickers, Photoshop, PowerPoint, and the new Office 2007. They cheered each other on as they shared ways to use the technologies to enhance their teaching. The series concluded with high-fives and pats on the back as each of the participants celebrated with a home-run hit.

The coaches are eagerly looking forward to starting another season next summer. If you are interested in participating, please contact the Instructional Technology Team at instructionaltech@carlow.edu.

Message Boards

New to Carlow this summer is the availability of LCD messaging systems. Two new electronic message boards were installed this summer. The first in Frances Warde Hall entryway and the second in the lobby of AJP. We are very excited about this technology enhancement to communication within the Carlow Community.

Procedures for requesting messages to be displayed and an electronic message board request form are located on the IT portion of the Carlow web site at http://it.carlow.edu/html/messageboards.htm

Next summer, additional LCD message boards will be installed in key locations on campus including Antonian and Grace Library.

Computer Lab Updates

This summer some exciting things occurred in our public computer labs on campus:

Frances Warde Hall: The large computer lab in Frances Warde Hall received new carpeting, paint, and six new computers.

Grace Library: The public lab located on the 3rd floor of Grace Library (GL 315) has been converted to a staff training facility. To accommodate this change, we have placed additional computers on the 4th floor of Grace Library and have opened room 408 for public use.

AJP: The lab located in AJP 202 received new computers for the entire lab.

All other labs received software updates and general maintenance.
