Project Updates

Psychology Department: The space formerly occupied by the television studio on the 5th floor of Antonian was transformed into the new offices for the Psychology Department faculty. The technology needed for the new space is in place and we welcome the faculty to their new home.

AJP Celtic Café: Even a coffee bar requires technology! The new facility in AJP offers coffee, drinks, small sandwiches, and wireless internet access! Over the summer, the I.T. department worked with campus Food Service to provide a cash register that ties in with the Carlow IDCard system enabling students to use their flex dollars there.

Surveillance System – Phase II: As planned, we will expand our campus-wide surveillance system to include key interior entry points and the replacement of the current cameras in our computer labs. The interior cameras will be state-of-the-art digital IP based cameras with no moving parts and will connect seamlessly with the surveillance system installed last year. This project, although not entirely completed this summer, will be ongoing throughout this academic year.

Wireless Phase III: This summer we completed the installation of access points to provide wireless access for St. Joe’s and the Tiernan Cafeteria. Wireless use has skyrocketed on campus and you can now regularly see students using the wireless access in the residence halls and the common areas on campus. For additional wireless related information please click on the following link.- http://it.carlow.edu/html/wireless.htm

Curran Nursing Lab Update: This summer the entire fourth floor of Curran Hall was transformed into a state of the art nursing skills lab. This area includes multiple uses of technology: nursing simulation mannequins with simulated breathing and medical reactions that the instructor can customize the simulation and speak through the mannequin, equipment to record audio and video of the nursing students practicing their simulations and play them back on 32” LCD computer monitors, a six-bed facility where students can practice their procedures while watching a tutorial on a 32” LCD monitor displayed above each bed, and an instructional classroom with smart classroom technology including a projector, computer, and a podium.

SPAM

Junk MailBothered by Spam? Most of us are. What can we do? First, we continue to rely on our anti-spam appliance, "the Barracuda" to block Spam for us. The Barracuda blocks over 100,000 messages a day and quarantines around 20,000. Second, since there is no way that the Barracuda can detect every Spam message, it is up to us to manage our own Barracuda accounts. Please click here to get information on how to manage your Barracuda account.

Spyware

Is your computer running slow? The cause could be SPYWARE. One way to find out if it is spyware is to run the Barracuda Spyware Tool on your computer. It's free to all users on the Carlow network. Instructions can be found here. It is a good idea to run this tool once a week to keep your system running at peak performance.

Office Update

Office 2007 will not be installed in the labs on campus for the fall ’07 semester. If you’d like to have it installed on your computer, you need to attend one overview session for Office 2007 and one hands-on session (Word, Excel, or PowerPoint) at the Computer Café. Please see the schedule in this newsletter. After you’ve completed the required sessions, you may send a request to the Help Desk to have it installed. Installation CD’s for Office ’07 home use will be available at the Help Desk for faculty and staff who have completed the training.

Sophos

Do you have an antivirus program installed on your system? If you do, are you sure you are getting the latest updates? For faculty and staff we have installed Sophos to combat viruses. All systems should have a blue shield in the bottom right hand corner of their screen. If it is not there, is not blue, or has a red X on the shield, please call the Help Desk right away. You are not protected. For resident students we offer Sophos for only $1.00. Sophos CDs are available at the Help Desk. For addition virus related information please click here.
