In addition to moving the MAC lab from FWH to Antonian 401, and supplying
some new computers to our computer labs, we made many other changes to
our computer labs over the summer. These include:
- One consistent set of software in all labs, to include: Windows XP
w/patches, Office 2003 w/media content, Publisher 2003, Front Page
2003, Lotus Notes web shortcut, Windows Media Player, FreeZip, WSFTP,
Adobe Acrobat 6.0, Java, Visio 2003, Project 2003, Internet Explorer
6.0 SP1, Dreamweaver MX. This is the first time Carlow has installed
the same software set on all lab PC's.
- Installing the newest versions of Adobe products in AJP 113, and
FWH 302 labs. This suite of products includes Adobe GoLive, Illustrator,
InDesign, Photoshop, and Premiere.
- Installation of Sassafras _ this is a keyserver that allows us to
purchase concurrent licensing agreements with our vendors, install
computer software on many computers, and the software insures that
we are in license compliance. This gives us the ability to cover more
computers with fewer licenses.
- A scanner was placed in every lab.
- Conversion of the computers from Novell to Active Directory.
- If you are a faculty member, and would like to see additional software
in the labs, please contact us at least one semester prior to the start
of your class.

Many of the larger summer I.T. projects are featured in this
newsletter, but there are many others that are also newsworthy. Here is
an update:
- Rewiring of our Frances Warde Hall and Dougherty network closets:
2 of our Pittsburgh Technical Institute interns spent about 6 weeks
completely rewiring all of the network closets in the residence hall.
For this project, they replaced all of the patch cables in the closet,
cleaned the fans and switches, tested every network port in the dorm
rooms, and labeled every port in the network software. This has already
proven to be a huge asset to us because it was much easier to track
down student computers with the Korgo virus during back-to-school.

- Orientation online tutorial _ A 10 lesson online Blackboard tutorial
was created to teach new students about our network policies, labs,
active directory, lotus, the e-portfolio, blackboard, webstudent, viruses/spyware,
and lots more! Students had the opportunity to take this class prior
to setting foot on Carlow's campus, and many commented on the thoroughness
and usefulness of the course.
- Blackboard was upgraded to the latest version of the software.
