Daylight Davings Time
Daylight Saving Time (DST) is changing in the US , Canada, and Bermuda 3 weeks earlier effective in 2007. Daylight savings time will begin on the 2nd Sunday in March (Mar 11th) and we will return to standard time on the 1st Sunday in November (November 4th). While this doesn’t seem like a big change, most pieces of technology have old algorithms in them to accommodate the previous time change settings and will not change the time correctly.

The Information Technology department is working to evaluate our critical servers and applications - like the Lotus Calendar, Email, the surveillance cameras, the ID Card readers, our phone/voicemail system, our time clocks, our fire system, lighting systems, etc. If you know of an application that relies on
time to operate or log events correctly, please let us know.

Likewise, you may need to adjust your VCR’s and Tivo’s programming at home since most of these devices rely on time that is sent by the cable company to record events. You will need to do this twice, once when the time actually changes this year, and once at the regularly scheduled daylight savings time three weeks later. You may also need to update your personal computers and answering machines at home. Advice will follow regarding the PCs based upon what we decide to advise at Carlow.

More information will follow in the next few weeks.

Network

Just like with Lotus, we have seen a drastic increase in the amount of network traffic that is coming in/out of our campus from the internet. Email traffic has greatly increased and people are watching more videos for educational purposes and on internet sites like youtube.com or newsites like cnn.com. In addition, sites like myspace.com now carry video content and sites are springing up across the internet for purchasing movie downloads.

All of these items add to the amount of traffic that is coming through our internet pipe at any one time. We are now seeing the network traffic peak around noon and stay at maximum capacity until about 9:00pm daily. This is expected to continue and expand.

To help solve this problem, we are currently working on two network projects. First, we are working with our vendors on obtaining pricing and equipment to expand our available internet bandwidth. This is not an easy fix as much of our network equipment, such as our router, spam filters, and scomputerpyware filters, have been sized to work with our current bandwidth size. This will require some swap out of equipment and budgetary considerations. We will announce any changes that we are making once these items are considered.

Second, we have already started Phase 1 of a six phase plan to upgrade our network to a gigabit network. While this will not help with our pipe to the internet, it will help speed the traffic that is traversing our internal network. Changes from this plan will not be immediately seen, but you’ll notice improvements over time as we move through the six phases of this plan.
