This summer, Carlow will go wireless! Over the summer months, Carlow will embark
on the first phase of a three phase project to bring wireless to campus. The first phase will be installed early in July and will include providing wireless access to the living areas in the dorms, most of Curran Hall, the Grace Library 2nd floor porch area and 2nd floor research area, and the Aquinas 1st floor MFA space.

The current plan for faculty, staff, and students will require a small piece of

client software to be loaded on to laptops and/or desktops that wish to attach to the wireless network. By using this software, the user will have access to all of their active directory resources including the H: drive. In addition, the network traffic generated during the session will be encrypted and secure. Guest access will also be available to anyone not currently an employee or student of Carlow, but this access will not be encrypted and the user will not have any access to internal Carlow resources.

Phases II and III will further expand wireless on campus to include AJP, more of Aquinas, the “green”, and more of Grace Library.

If you intend on purchasing a new wireless computer, or are bringing one to campus, feel free to call our helpdesk if you wish to ensure that your wireless card and computer will work properly on the campus wireless network.

External Caller-ID
On April 15th, the Telecommunications department installed equipment to enable external caller-ID on all campus faculty and staff phones with display units. This will also be available to dorm students with analog sets on a limited basis. The caller ID simply passes along information obtained from the phone company including the name (if available) and the phone number of the caller.

Online Payments
- In early April, Carlow’s website was expanded to include the ability to take online credit card payments. The website was updated to encrypt all personal information submitted, and to process credit card transactions according to strict Visa standards. Credit card information is never stored on a Carlow server. The first application to use this feature is the “Make-A-Gift” web page. We are working with several other departments to be able to take payments for their events, such as Alumnae Weekend.

Carlow Card ID System Updates
In February, the I.T. department worked to install some additional readers for our Carlow Card ID system. These include two copy card readers: one in the library and one in FWH. The copiers will now accept Carlow cash for purchasing copies. In addition, a time clock was installed in Grace Library and will begin official use by the facilities staff in late April. Also in April, we installed Uniprint to help monitor paper usage in the public labs. Uniprint will also require the Carlow Card for access to printing in the labs.
