In our last newsletter, we
detailed the upcoming release of our SPAM solution, Barracuda. On February
21st,
2005, we released Barracuda for general use throughout the campus.
During the first week of operation, the product blocked 74,488 messages,
and it quarantined another 12,470. That trend has not changed. In the
first 2 months of operation, between February 21st and April 21st,
the product blocked 546,972 messages campus-wide, and it quarantined
another 116,224 messages. In fact, only 33.4% of the messages we receive
are legitimate
Each
user has the option to block messages or ‘whitelist’ messages
based upon personal preference. So, if you are receiving messages from
a SPAM emailer and the Barracuda appliance is not catching the email,
you can tell Barracuda to always block these messages. This is done by
logging into Barracuda and modifying your personal preferences. Likewise,
if you prefer to receive email from certain sources, and they are getting
blocked or tagged, you can ‘whitelist’ the email. If you
have any questions on how to use Barracuda, please contact our I.T. helpdesk
at x8700.
