This March, we started to migrate the campus from McAfee Anti-virus to Sophos Anti-virus. The migration has gone well, with just a few minor setbacks. At the time of publication of this newsletter, we hope to have all machines converted to Sophos. If your machine has not yet been converted, please call our helpdesk. Below, you will find a few commonly asked questions and answers about the switch.
What does this mean to you?
  1) Desktop protection: Most faculty and staff machines will be updated by the end of April. Your new anti-virus software will seek out new virus definitions every 3 hours automatically from a centralized server maintained on our campus.

2) The Information Technology Department will now be able to PUSH new anti-virus definitions to your machine when a new virus outbreak occurs. This ensures that your machine will be constantly kept at a level that will help prevent the spread of the virus on our campus.

3) EMAIL - email will be scanned for viruses as normal. You will see little, if any, change.

4) DORM STUDENTS - Students who live in FWH or Dougherty can use Sophos FREE of charge - we will be announcing how to obtain the software shortly.

5) FACULTY/STAFF/ALL EMPLOYEES - Sophos has provided free home use for all employees of Carlow University. We will be announcing how to obtain this software shortly.

6) All servers will be scanned, including the "H:" drive and all shared drives. This will help to ensure virus-free file-sharing throughout the administrative community.
Why switch from McAfee to Sophos?
1) The Sophos solution is more cost-effective. McAfee recently changed its pricing structure and was requiring Carlow to purchase brand new perpetual licenses for its product this year. This provided an opportunity for Carlow to re-bid the anti-virus software. By leveraging an agreement with AICUP (Association of Independent Colleges & Universities of Pennsylvania), we were able to obtain fantastic pricing that will allow the College to save approximately $30,000 over the next 5 years. Further, it will ensure that our costs remain static with no annual increases over the next 5 years.

2) While you may not have heard of Sophos, they have routinely been the first anti-virus software manufacturer to distribute new dat files on many of the recent virus outbreaks, including Korgo. Additionally, they cater to enterprise level clients and have been routinely ranked in the trade magazines as the best anti-virus solution.
