Welcome to the Spring 2007 Edition of Bits-n-Bytes!

beeWelcome to this academic year-end edition of Bits-N-Bytes! This newsletter highlights the exciting new opportunities that the new administrative system will bring Carlow, the many summer projects for this year, and it will provide an update on Microsoft Vista and Office 2007. In addition, we spotlight a faculty member who has recently created and taught a solely online class for Carlow.

As always, I’d like to thank the hard-working staff of the I.T. department for their dedication and hard work throughout the year. They are truly a pleasure to work with!

Thank you.

SmartClassroom

This year, we enter the second year of our smart classroom renovations. As we chose the classrooms to upgrade, we considered several factors including the rooms where media equipment was most frequently requested throughout this academic year, the budget, and the existing infrastructure in the rooms.

We are happy to be able to renovate these classrooms during the summer of 2007: AJP 115 (finish), AJP 116, AJP 302 (finish), AQ 308, AQ 408, ANT 513. Each of these rooms will receive a complete set-up including a podium, projector, computer, DVD/VCR player, receiver, and speakers.

In addition, GL241A will receive a projector with screen and AJP107 (Donnelly Theatre) will receive replacement projectors that will be programmed into the podium controller system. Finally, we will replace about 10 of the existing projectors in classrooms across campus as they can no longer be serviced and are experiencing significant problems.

Summer Institutes

This year, we will offer two summer institutes. The first will be held May 21st through 25th and will focus on expanding your skills with Blackboard. This institute will not only discuss the technology but will also cover teaching techniques for the integration of Blackboard.

The second summer institute will be held from June 11th to June 16th, and will focus on advanced technologies for teaching with technology. The topics will include advanced Photoshop skills, video presentation skills, and will also include the exciting new capabilities of Office 2007.

If you are a full-time or adjunct faculty member, it’s not too late to join us! Both sessions are one week long and run from 9am to noon daily. We try hard to include a cross-section of faculty from various disciplines so that they can share new ideas with one another during the class. Please contact instructionaltech@carlow.edu to request your seat.
