This year, we are carefully considering our replacement of lab computers across campus in light of the Microsoft Vista/Office 2007 developments. We know, for certain, that we will be upgrading the Nursing lab in Curran 407 with new computers and these will use Windows XP. However, at this particular point in time we can not commit to upgrading additional labs during the summer with new computers.
This is not to say that we will not be upgrading our labs throughout this fiscal year. In fact, we have earmarked monies for replacement computers. However, we have already experienced significant problems when downgrading Vista installed computers to XP and unless our vendors can guarantee us some success |
with XP, it is appropriate for us to simply wait until the break at the end of the Fall semester for additional upgrades. By that time, we will be able to better determine if we can upgrade a lab to Vista or if it is necessary for us to wait.
As we do every year, however, each lab will receive upgraded versions of software according to our licensing agreements with our vendors. For example, SPSS will be upgraded consistently in all of the labs. Likewise, Dreamweaver will be upgraded. If you have questions about a particular software product, please contact us and we can help determine the version that we will be placing on all lab computers. |

| - Psychology Department: The space formerly occupied by the television studio is being transformed into the new offices for the psychology department faculty. The demolition of the studio was completed over the winter and the I.T. department quickly wired the area for both phones and data. Once completely remodeled, we will help to relocate the existing faculty computers and offices to the new space. |
| - AJP Coffee Bar: Even a coffee bar requires technology! The new facility in AJP will offer coffee, drinks, small sandwiches, and wireless internet access! In addition, the I.T. department is working with the campus food service to provide a cash register that will tie in with the Carlow ID Card. |
|
| - Surveillance System – Phase II: As planned, we will expand our campus-wide surveillance system to include key interior entry points and the replacement of the current cameras in our computer labs. The interior cameras will be state-of-the-art digital IP based cameras with no moving parts and will connect seamlessly with the surveillance system installed last year. |
| - Wireless Phase III: This year, we will complete the wireless network on campus by providing wireless access for St. Joe’s and Tiernan, including the campus school and the cafeteria. Wireless use has skyrocketed on campus and you can now regularly see students using the wireless access in the residence halls and the common areas on campus. |
