Currently, the Carlow wireless guest account does not require a password. This poses several potential issues: providing access to our network to people who don't log in increases the likelihood of a security problem; unknown users could potentially use our network for illegal activities and/or activities we don't sanction; and we cannot afford to give away bandwidth to people who may not even be associated with Carlow University.
In order to address these issues, early this semester Carlow will begin requiring all users of our wireless network to log in. We will send out a notice ahead of time. The only change you will notice is that you will have to log on using the same Active Directory username and password you use to log in to Carlow computers. Visitors to campus who need to use the wireless network will have to get the current password for the guest account before connecting. If you are hosting a visitor on campus who will need to use wireless access to the Internet, please call the IT Help Desk (412-578-8700) and identify yourself to get the current password. The IT department will be changing this password frequently in order to keep it (and our network) secure. |

Over the summer months, two electronic message boards were installed on campus to display information for the Carlow community. One message board is just inside the entryway in Frances Warde Hall Lobby, and the other message board can be found as you enter AJP from Fifth Avenue.
Since August, there have been over 100 different messages displayed on these screens! The information displayed has ranged from sports updates to school closings. Student organization meetings, special classes, class speakers, as well as special events are also popular messages on these screens. Please take the time to check them out the next time you are in the lobby of Frances Warde Hall or AJP to be sure you are up to date on what’s going on around you at Carlow! We hope to install more message boards during 2008.
To learn more about the message board procedures or to make a request for information to be displayed, please fill out a form at the Help Desk or the Student Life Office. You can also find this same information online by clicking here |

Do you have an antivirus program installed on your system? If you do, are you sure you are getting the latest updates? We have installed Sophos on faculty, staff, and computer lab PCs to combat viruses. All systems should have a blue shield in the bottom right hand corner of their screen. If it is not there, is not blue, or has a red X on the shield, please call the Help Desk right away, because you are not protected. For resident students we offer Sophos for only $1.00. Sophos CDs are available at the Help Desk. For additional virus related information, please visit http://it.carlow.edu/updates/index.html. |

In consultation with the Technology Advisory Council and the Academic Computing Committee, the decision was made to move Carlow University to Office 2007 this coming summer. We will be installing Office 2007 on PCs across campus department-by-department starting soon after Spring semester ends. Anyone who wishes to have Office 2007 installed on their Carlow PC before then can call the Help Desk at x8700 to make an appointment. |
