Understanding the To, CC, and BCC Mail Message Fields in an Email

When sending an email message you have a few options when addressing the message.

To:
cc:
bcc:

To:
- this is the main mail message recipient

cc: Carbon Copy
- refers to the practice of sending a message to multiple recipients
- this lists addresses to which a message will be sent, the addresses will be seen by all recipients (thus allowing them to reply to each other as well as the sender)

bcc: Blind Carbon Copy
- refers to the practice of sending a message to recipients that are secretly being informed of the message
- the recipients will not receive the replies that are directed to all
- this lists addresses to which a message will be sent, but the addresses are not seen by the recipients and they do not receive the complete list of recipients
-- when sending a email esp. to a mailing list it is best to use bcc, because it avoids making a long list of email addresses available to all the recipients
